    The Power of the Weak

A landmark result in the study of logics for formal verification is Janin and Walukiewicz’s theorem, stating that the modal μ-calculus (μML) is equivalent modulo bisimilarity to standard monadic second-order logic (here abbreviated as SMSO) over the class of labelled transition systems (LTSs for short). Our work proves two results of the same kind, one for the alternation-free or noetherian fragment μNML of μML on the modal side and one for WMSO, weak monadic second-order logic, on the second-order side. In the setting of binary trees, with explicit functions accessing the left and right successor of a node, it was known that WMSO is equivalent to the appropriate version of alternation-free μ-calculus. Our analysis shows that the picture changes radically once we consider, as Janin and Walukiewicz did, the standard modal μ-calculus, interpreted over arbitrary LTSs. The first theorem that we prove is that, over LTSs, μNML is equivalent modulo bisimilarity to noetherian MSO (NMSO), a newly introduced variant of SMSO where second-order quantification ranges over “conversely well-founded” subsets only. Our second theorem starts from WMSO and proves it equivalent modulo bisimilarity to a fragment of μNML defined by a notion of continuity. Analogously to Janin and Walukiewicz’s result, our proofs are automata-theoretic in nature: As another contribution, we introduce classes of parity automata characterising the expressiveness of WMSO and NMSO (on tree models) and of μCML and μNML (for all transition systems)

Narrative interviews were conducted with 2 girls (1active and 1 sedentary) and 2 boys (1 active and 1sedentary). Thematic analysis identified a number of key personal, social and environmental influences on physical activity (PA) that distinguished the two groups of students, through their childhood and adolescence. These included PA history, the value of sedentary behaviours, social support from family and friends for PA, safety and PA facilities in the local neighbourhood, PA participation in school besides Physical Education (PE), primary and secondary school and experiences in PE, PE teachers and PE peers, PA and health knowledge and perception of PE goals, and attitudes toward school and PE

Short term effects of irradiance on the growth of Pterocladiella capillacea (Gelidiales, Rhodophyta)

Pterocladiella capillacea has been economically exploited for agar extraction in the Azores for many years. Harvesting dropped to a full stop in the early 1990s due to a population collapse, but restarted in 2013. Since then it has been intensively harvested and overexploitation must be prevented, with both sustainable harvesting and effective cultivation practices. This study represents the first attempt to determine optimal conditions for P. capillacea production in the Azores, and evaluates its vegetative growth in two experiments using von Stosch’s medium designed to test entire thallus and tips portions response to different irradiances (30, 70 and 150 μmol photons m¯² s¯¹). The best relative growth rate (RGR) was recorded at 150 μmol photons m¯² s¯¹ for the entire thalli and tips after two-weeks and three-weeks, respectively, indicating that an acclimation period is necessary to assure the growth of this alga under experimental conditions. Higher RGR was obtained at higher irradiance (3.98 ± 2.10% fm day¯¹), but overall, growth rates were low or negative. Epiphytes were a serious problem towards the end of the entire thallus experiments, where Feldmannia irregularis proliferate at all irradiances. Future cultivation approaches complemented with other relevant environmental factors (e.g. pH, photoperiod, salinity), are recommended.FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia projects UID/BIA/00329/2013, 2015 - 2018 and UID/BIA/00329/2019, CIRN (Centro de Investigação de Recursos Naturais, University of the Azores), and CIIMAR (Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research, Porto, Portugal). No abstract.

Immunodeficiency and Autoimmunity Coming Together: a Nearly Missed Diagnosis

    Get PDF
The coexistence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) appears to be unusual and the prevalence of patients who carry the dual diagnosis is currently unknown. We hereby present a case of a C4 deficient HIV-1 positive Caucasian female under highly active antiretroviral therapy for the past eight years, admitted to hospital with an aggressive and potentially fatal clinical presentation of SLE. There was a favorable outcome despite a significant diagnostic delay. Despite its rarity, the case highlights that this association is remarkable and may be overlooked by clinicians familiar with either condition.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Incontinentia Pigmenti in the Neonatal Period

    Get PDF
Incontinentia pigmenti (IP) is a rare multisystem disease, X linked dominant disorder. As all X linked dominant diseases, it is usually male-lethal. Female newborn admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit on the fi rst day of life was diagnosed as having probable herpetic infection with vesicular skin lesions distributed on upper right limb and inferior limbs. Family history showed that her 22-year-old mother had hypopigmented lesions on the lower limbs and her 13-month-old sister had hyperpigmented lesions on the trunk and limbs. In newborns, herpes infection emerges as the principal diagnosis of vesicular rash, due to the importance of precocious diagnosis and treatment. Other hypothesis must be considered in a newborn with vesicobullous rash, such as IP

Removal of S. Mansoni in patients with hepatosplenig schistosomiasis: An estimate of the Parasitological load by means of quantitative coproscopy

32 Patients with an average age of 18.9 years suffering from schistosomiasis mansoni in its compensated hepatosplenic from who never taken schistosomicidal drugs 'were studied. All the patients were submitted to splenectorrry and filtration of the portal blood for the removal of S. mansoni. A study was made of the relationship between the average number of eggs per gram of faeces obtained from the ana{ysis of 10 successive samples of each patient's faeces b¡r the Kato.,Ifutz method and the number of worms removed from the portal blood. The statistical procedure used revealed a significant relationship between the parameters studied, permitting the establishment of the respective regression equations designed to estimate the numbers of female worms, pairs of ,worms and total worms. From the results and the application of a technique for the constitution of extremé subgroups, the authors propose a classification of the intensity of infection; a) light parasitic load: average number of eggs per gram of faeces less than B0B, corresponding to an estimated parasitic load of less than 226 female worms; b) moderate parasitic load: average number of eggs per gram of faeces between B0B and 3968, corresponding to an estimated. parasitic load. of between 226 and.528 female worms; c) Íntense parasitic load: average number of eggs per gram of faeces greater than 3968, corresponding to an estimated parasitic load greater than 528 female worms. On the basis of the proposed. classification the Authors discuss the indication of specific treatment for schistosomiasis mansoni in patients with the hepatosplenic form of the disease

Controlling magnetic order and quantum disorder in molecule-based magnets.

We investigate the structural and magnetic properties of two molecule-based magnets synthesized from the same starting components. Their different structural motifs promote contrasting exchange pathways and consequently lead to markedly different magnetic ground states. Through examination of their structural and magnetic properties we show that [Cu(pyz)(H 2 O)(gly) 2 ](ClO 4 ) 2 may be considered a quasi-one-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet whereas the related compound [Cu(pyz)(gly)](ClO 4 ) , which is formed from dimers of antiferromagnetically interacting Cu 2+ spins, remains disordered down to at least 0.03 K in zero field but shows a field-temperature phase diagram reminiscent of that seen in materials showing a Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons
